Session II

Topic: Conversation is key

Introduction: Conversation is the way we humans think and plan our actions together. Although it may seem obvious, conversation is necessary for human growth and survival. By talking with others we discover what is important to us, share what we know and create our future together. Conversation is more important than ever in the new information age. Conversation can take place in a community hall or on the Internet. The basic idea is the same. More than one person shares their ideas. The core process is the same, in person or online. Conversation is key.

Objectives : By the end of this session, you will:

  • Understand why conversation is key to the World Café method
  • See the connection between conversation and action

Notes for Animators

Hi there!

Anita Animator again…..

I want to show you how important conversation is in every day life. Imagine trying to communicate with someone without talking. (Unless you are Deaf and use ASL, it might not be easy.) You have so much to say to another person, to ask them. What would you like to know about them? Think of the questions you would have…..How would you do this without speaking?

So much to say but no talking allowed.

As animators, you can have people do this in pairs. Have them talk to another person. Find out where they live. Who is their closest friend?

Then discuss in the larger group what it was like to find things out without talking.

Start Talking and Get to Work

This is a key theme in World Café conversation. It shows how important talking is for working together. In this way, talking and action are not separate activities but joined as part of one process. One is needed for the other to happen. Many of us are used to being told, “stop talking and get to work.” World Café begins the other way around. Why? Because actively expressing ideas and opinions is an important part of World Café work and learning. Talking is the work.

Journal Question: Are you someone who likes to talk or do you prefer to listen to others? Do you think it's more important to stop talking or start talking? Why?

Materials Needed: See Pictures

Reflection: We are learning more about the World Café method. We can see how important conversation is to daily life and to work projects. What other things need to be discussed?
