Board of Directors
Yolande Lawson-Body
Yolande is originally from Togo where her work experience
was as a business owner, accountant assistant and culture
and free time manager. Since her arrival in Canada she has
continued to work in similar fields and is currently an
administrative assistant with Path to Employment of Edmonton
Mennonite Centre for Newcomers. She brings her diverse skills
and commitment to the board where she hopes to help build
a healthy society. She expects to gain valuable new experiences
while serving as a board member.
Kelly L. Mckean
Kelly has an M.A. in Political Science from Carleton University
in Ottawa and currently works for the Government of Alberta.
Kelly has been an active volunteer in Edmonton for several
years. Prior to joining the Board at Action for Healthy
Communities, she served on the Board of Changing Together...
A Centre for Immigrant Women for four years and volunteered
with Catholic Social Services' Refugee Host Program.
Lisette Moores
Lisette Moores involvement with AHC started three years
ago as a leadership assignment for school. Her rewarding
experience encouraged her to continue volunteering as the
silent auction coordinator for AHC's "Creative Expressions"
fundraiser. Recently graduated from the University of Alberta,
she has a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Marketing,
and is currently working for ACTON, a management consulting
firm.
Doug Piquette
Doug has strong community development skills through his
extensive experience over the years working and managing
two Community Futures programs focusing on both business
and social community development in a rural context. His
networking skills and experiences are highly relevant in
working towards fostering and maintaining positive community
relationships and assisting in the identification of viable
social development opportunities for communities and community
groups. Through work with CUSO in Bolivia, Doug had the
opportunity to immerse himself in multi-cultural settings
with local indigenous communities and to use his skills
in establishing trust, developing a good rapport, and building
productive working relationships with community groups.
His work over the years has included facilitating community
processes to determine viable and clear direction for community
organizations and where they want to go. Doug currently
works for the Community Futures Network of Alberta as a
Community Economic Development (CED) Specialist in rural
Alberta.
Marlene Williams
Marlene Williams has a diploma from the Rehabilitation Practitioner
Program at Grant McEwen and has up until a few years ago,
worked for many years as a Community Support Worker. During
that time Marlene served on the board of the Edmonton Brain
Injury Society as well as with several communities, in both
advising and working with the Alberta Association for Community
Living, capacity building grant process.
Miguel Angel Campos
Miguel graduated with a degree in Accounting and Business
Administration and is currently working as an Accountant
for Hope Mission. Miguel has 15 years experience working
as a project advisor in El Salvador and 15 more years of
experience in Canada at the Group Sicoterapia Ayala (GSA)
as a psychotherapy group leader working with people that
deal with substance abuse. Miguel also works a local Latin
American radio station that runs various programs for the
community.
Ninfa Flora Castellanos
Ninfa has more than 20 years experience in the social services
field, including 16 years experience providing employment
counselling services and coordinating programs and projects
to help immigrant professionals to integrate into Canadian
society. She has strong experience working with people from
different cultural backgrounds. Currently, she works as
Temporary Foreign Workers Advisor for Alberta Employment
Immigration and Industry, Citizenship Immigration Canada.
Nancy Finlayson
Nancy Finlayson has been involved in volunteer groups in
Alberta for several decades, as founding director for both
the Northern Alberta Branch of the Sustainable Agriculture
Association and The Garden Institute of Alberta. She is
a professional Aerologist recently retired from a career
as an environmental scientist in Edmonton. She holds an
M.Sc degree in Soil Science from University of Alberta.
Randall Fraser
Randall attended the University of Alberta where he studied
drama and theatre design. He studied under a master carver
in Bali and also went to Trinidad to study the creation
and animation of giant puppets. He is a respected artist
in Alberta and his signature works are masks and puppets.
He has won a Sterling Award for theatre design. He particularly
likes working with young people and has had experience working
with a variety of cultures. He was one of the original participants
of Trickster Theatre and is the founder of Scarab Productions
and the Stilt Walkers Society.
Mary Gniazdowsky
Mary is a Case Manager with the Workers' Compensation Board,
having been named employee of the year at Alberta Human
Resources and Employment and moved on to new challenges.
She brings to the position a B. Com and Diploma of Social
Work and extensive training in human development coursework.
Mary does not say if she is a runner or not.
Sarah Strel
Sarah was born and raised in Edmonton. She has a B.A. (1972)
and obtained a Bachelor of Social Work from the University
of Calgary in 2002. Through her current employment at The
Support Network - Edmonton's Crisis and 211 Centre - she
has an extensive knowledge of local community resources.
In the past, she has worked or volunteered with agencies
such as the Bredin Institute, Edmonton Immigrant Services
Association, Waln Foundation for Families and Children,
and her neighborhood community league. She is interested
in supporting community building in Edmonton and in learning
more about its process. In her private life, Sarah enjoys
training for half marathon walks and hiking in the mountains.
Kyle Whitfield
Professionally, Kyle's experience is in health and wellness
supporting marginalized people to become more included in
society, through which she has gained a Ph. D. from the
University of Waterloo, preceded by a Masters Degree from
the University of Guelph. She left Ontario to join us here
in Edmonton at the University of Alberta. She has worked
with seniors, people with developmental disabilities, and
members of immigrant/ refugee populations in both rural
and urban settings. Kyle has shared her expertise and experience
through a large number of publications in scholarly, technical
and other publications. In her private life Kyle is an active
runner and regularly runs marathons and other long races
